Why Your Drain Keeps Blocking Again

by Aydin merih Ozyer 26 May 2026

A blocked drain is frustrating — but when the same blockage keeps coming back, the real problem is usually deeper inside the pipes.

Most recurring drain problems are caused by a gradual build-up of:

  • Grease and cooking fat
  • Soap residue
  • Hair and organic waste
  • Food particles
  • Hardened debris inside pipe walls

At first, water may still flow slowly. But over time, the inside diameter of the pipe becomes smaller and smaller until a full blockage happens again.

Common Signs Before a Major Blockage

  • Slow draining sinks
  • Bad smells from the drain
  • Gurgling sounds
  • Water backing up
  • Frequent minor clogs

Many people temporarily fix the issue with plungers or supermarket liquids, but these often only clear the centre of the blockage — not the hardened build-up around the pipe walls.

Why Caustic Soda Works

Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) reacts with grease, fat, and organic material, helping break down stubborn build-up inside the pipes.

When used correctly, it can help:

  • Dissolve grease accumulation
  • Clear organic waste
  • Improve water flow
  • Reduce recurring blockages
